Dr. Cindy Emmans
My career in education started as a music teacher in Minnesota until 1983, at which point I had the wonderful opportunity to move to Europe with my husband and made a career switch to computers (but stayed in teaching), working as a computer applications trainer. After earning a doctorate in Educational Media and Technology from Boston University I turned to professional development for educators in Department of Defense Dependents’ Schools and international schools in Europe, with educational technology as my key area.
The experiences in Europe were followed by a 7-year stint at Central Washington University in Ellensburg where I earned the rank of full professor and became tenured. From there I followed my husband to San Diego where he had been named the Dean of the College of Extended Studies at San Diego State University. By this point, UMUC was making its first forays into online education and I had the privilege of leading and teaching the first cohort of teachers earning a master’s degree in education that was totally online through Bowie State University.
In addition to the UMUC experience I taught and mentored online for some other universities, and then accepted a position as the Dean of Education at American Public University System. Not one to let grass grow under my feet, I then took a 1-year position as a visiting professor in Bahrain, working with the new teachers’ college at the University of Bahrain. It was a rewarding experience that still reverberates as the events of the Arab Spring and beyond have evolved. During the 2010-2011 academic year I was the Director of Information and Communication Technology at the Anglo American School of Moscow, a large preK-12 international school.
As of summer 2011, my wonderful husband and I have settled back into our home in the hills of eastern WV and we travel when possible for pleasure rather than for work purposes. My hobbies include jogging, gardening, and chamber music.
