Steve Kerby
I began working at UMUC in 1998 as a Distance Education Coordinator. I did a lot of faculty training and support back then, as well as working with issues of online course development and instructional design. When I left in 2002, I was Assistant Dean of Distance Education for the Graduate School.
Currently, my day job is Director of Instructional Technology and Online Learning at McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland. I manage an online graduate program there and do a lot of online instructional design. I also consult on occasion and, of course, still teach a little. At UMUC, I currently hold the position of Associate Adjunct Faculty. I usually teach one section of IMAT 639 each semester.
Over the years, I've gone to school quite a bit. I've attended Hardin-Simmons University, Texas Wesleyan University, University of Texas, University of North Texas, George Washington University, The University of Baltimore, and UMUC. In my early years, I studied Religion, Philosophy, and English Literature. I actually taught College English for about ten years. (I’m ABD in Critical Theory.) Lately, however, I’ve been studying instructional design and Distance Education. My most recent degree is the MDE in 2008.
I’m a book collector and an opera collector. I also attend as many operas as I possibly can. The Metropolitan Opera House in New York City is my favorite spot in the world.
My wife and I moved to Maryland from Texas in 1994. Currently, we live out in the country near the Pennsylvania line. While we both still have a little twang in our voices, we absolutely think of ourselves as Marylanders and East Coast folks.
