UMUC offers a significant list of Graduate Certificates. The following MDE certificates are all subsets of the four MDE specializations. This means that you can start by earning a certificate and then decide if you want to move forward with a master's degree. Or, while on the way to your master's degree, you can earn certificates and include these educational milestones on your resume.

The certificate in distance education leadership focuses on aspects related to management of distance education. It provides a basic foundation in terms of theory and history of distance education, as well as the use of technology in distance education. The certificate in distance education, globalization, and development examines how distance education has been used and the audiences it has reached. It allows students to explore organizational models for distance education at various educational levels and analyze the roles played by international agencies. The certificate in foundations of distance education and e-learning is intended to represent the study of the four basic foundational aspects of the field of distance education: history and theory, media and technology, economics, and support of the student. Read more.
Instructional Design for E-Learning
This joint certificate is being offered through UMUC and University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). Courses combined from the two institutions lead to a certificate in Instructional Design for E-Learning.*
This certificate provides knowledge and skills in the field of course design, development, and delivery at a distance, with a focus on e-learning. It addresses the need of e-learning professionals, who are engaged in online course development and delivery. Students will take four courses covering topics in the areas of training at a distance, the use of technology in distance education, and instructional design. UMUC brings its expertise in distance education and technology, while UMBC brings it expertise in instructional design and course development. Read more.
* Students wishing to earn the certificate must apply to either UMBC or UMUC for admission to the certificate program. Once admitted, students may take courses at the other institution as a visiting student. Courses from the other institution will be treated as transfer credit at their home institution, leading to the joint certificate.
Library and Intellectual Property in Distance Education and E-Learning
The certificate in Library and Intellectual Property in Distance Education and E-learning will offer a solid foundation in distance education, distance education technology and the development and delivery of digital resources for distance education. Students will cover intellectual property issues affecting the use of copyrighted works in distance education, developing and delivering library resources online to a faculty and student population, and the future of digital information delivery and the impact of digital rights management (DRM) technologies and social networking.
