Dr. Nick Allen
I first joined UMUC in 1987 as a senior faculty member and director of general management and executive programs in the Graduate School. I became Dean in 1991 and served in that post during a time of significant innovation, program expansion, and growth. In 1998 I was asked to take a leadership role in what became UMUC’s transition to the 21st century. During these years of dramatic and revolutionary growth in online education, I served as the University’s first provost and chief academic officer, and then Interim President following President Gerald Heeger’s resignation in 2005 until Susan C. Aldridge’s appointment in 2006. I sought to provide leadership and strategic direction to integrate and strengthen our worldwide academic operations as UMUC emerged as the 2nd largest public university in the United States and one of the world’s largest virtual universities with online enrollments reaching 177,000 in 2007. The future will judge how well we succeeded.
With my retirement from the provost post in 2007, I became Provost Emeritus and Collegiate Professor in our Graduate School where I now teach in both the Master of Distance Education (MDE) and Doctor of Management (DM) programs. As ambassador for the University, my goals are now to provide a frequent and strong voice for continuing and higher education and to be an advocate for using technology and process reengineering to achieve access to high quality, affordable education on a scalable basis.
I also serve on the Commission for Lifelong Learning of the American Council of Education, the Executive Strategic Council of the IMS Global Learning Consortium, and until recently the Interim Board of Trustees for the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE).
