Our Mission
The mission of the Master of Distance Education & E-learning is to qualify present and future managers of distance education. Given that distance education - and e-learning - have expanded so rapidly in the past few years in both public and private education, as well as in the training sectors, the program educates the multitude of new managers and future leaders necessary in this field. These managers increasingly need the legitimacy of formal qualification, since they will be required to be active advocates for distance education and training in their organizations and need to manage significant change processes that may impact the entire organization.
About the Curriculum
The curriculum requires 36 credits of coursework and is divided into 15 credits of required program core coursework, and 21 credits of required coursework, including a 3-credit capstone course, from one of the program specializations. More details about the curriculum can be found here.

MDE Specializations & Dual Degrees
There are three specializations available for MDE learners:
Distance Education Technology (DETC), Distance Education Teaching and Training (DETT), and Distance Education Policy and Management (DEPM). UMUC also offers four dual degree programs: Master of Science in Management, Master in Business Administration, Master of Education, and Master of Science in Technology Management. (Students must complete all requirements for the first degree before beginning the second degree.) |
Our Graduate Certificates
Graduate certificates in the MDE are being phased out. If you are currently enrolled in a certificate program, you will be able to complete the requirements to earn your certificate; however, no new students will be able to enroll in a certificate program beginning Fall 2015.
If you are looking for something shorter or to get some formalized milestones in distance education while you pursue your degree, make sure you check out all the certificates that we have to offer you here (within this site) or here (outside of this site). UMUC and University of Maryland Baltimore County offer a joint graduate certificate in E-Learning and Instructional Design. Students take two courses through UMBC and three through UMUC. This certificate enables to benefit from UMBC's instructional design and course development expertise and UMUC's distance learning expertise. |
